DOUGLAS DENNISTON

[1922-2004]

"The Pool", 1954 | 18”x20” - watercolor collage

In his watercolor collage "The Pool", Douglas Denniston expresses the sensation of a deep pool of water by positioning a swirling circle of reds, blues, and black in the center of the paper. A dark blue portion in the upper left against a black passage adds to the intensity of feeling. This painting fulfills the definition of Abstract Expressionism in both terms---it appears to be abstract in its non-representational forms and is the artist's expression of a pool.
